4th COVID Dose to Those Eligible

4th COVID Dose to Those Eligible

Wyandot Memorial Hospital is offering additional doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for moderately or severely immunocompromised individuals in accordance with CDC guidelines.

People ages 12 years and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should receive a total of four doses of COVID-19 vaccine. The four doses are made up of a primary series of three doses of an mRNA (Moderna or Pfizer) COVID-19 vaccine, plus one booster of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.

People ages 18 years and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised and received the one dose J&J COVID-19 vaccine should get a second dose of either Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, plus a booster for a total of three doses.

Children ages 5 through 11 years who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should receive a primary series of three doses of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. A booster is not recommended for this age group at this time.

Many conditions and treatments can cause a person to be immunocompromised, also known as having a weakened immune system. Individuals are considered to be moderately or severely immunocompromised if they have the following:
• Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
• Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
• Received a stem cell transplant within the last two years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
• Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency
• Advanced or untreated HIV infection
• Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress their immune response

Individuals should talk with their medical provider about COVID-19 vaccination recommendations given their medical condition and health history.

“We know changes to the vaccine guidelines can be confusing,” noted Quality and Infection Prevention Director Valerie Schalk. “Reach out to us on the hospital’s COVID Call Line and we’ll be glad to help you sort it all out.”

Wyandot Memorial offers Pfizer, Moderna and J&J COVID-19 vaccines for the initial series and boosters according to CDC eligibility guidelines. The vaccines are available at the hospital’s walk-in clinics from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and appointments are available upon request.

The COVID-19 vaccines are administered at the hospital’s surgery entrance and provided free of charge. For more information about COVID-19 vaccines and testing, phone the WMH Covid Call Line at 419-294-4991, extension 2684 (COVI).
