Athletic Trainer Assigned to Carey High School

Certified Athletic Trainer Elle Smith has been recruited to provide injury care and performance improvement training techniques for Carey High School student athletes starting with fall sports practices.

Smith will work with coaches and athletes in all sports for on-site medical care for practices and games or matches. She will treat and manage sports injuries, illnesses and conditions; and coordinate care with UrgentCare, the Emergency Department and medical and rehabilitative specialists at Wyandot Memorial Hospital as needed. She will also provide concussion prevention and management, and streamline return-to-play to keep athletes safe and in the game.

The hospital’s SportsCare program has partnered with CHS to have a certified athletic trainer as part of the athletic staff. As a healthcare professional, an athletic trainer is responsible for injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

Smith earned a Master of Athletic Training at the University of Findlay. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Malone University in Canton, where her major was exercise science (concentration in personal training) with a minor in athletic training. During her clinical experience at Van Buren High School with Ohio Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, she designed and implemented injury-specific rehabilitation programs and instructed athletes through exercises. While at Bluffton High School with Blanchard Valley Health Systems, she performed injury evaluations, documentation and rehabilitation, and administered concussion protocol in accordance with OHSAA rules and regulations. At UF, she worked with student athletes in wrestling, baseball, football, cheer and women’s basketball.

Smith is board certified by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and licensed by the Ohio Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners. She is certified in American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED for the professional rescuer.
