Balance Class Starts June 4

Wyandot Memorial Hospital is offering A Matter of Balance classes starting Tuesday, June 4 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The classes continue each Tuesday and Thursday through June 27 for a total of eight two-hour sessions.

“Each class builds upon the previous week, so participants should plan to attend all eight classes,” explained Fortune Bormuth, WMH Wellness Center exercise physiologist and A Matter of Balance coach.

Bormuth reported that 83 percent of past class participants improved their overall confidence related to controlling or preventing falls. Participants also noted a decrease in fall-related concerns that limited social activities, and even began to exercise three times a week or more, compared to no involvement in exercise prior to the class.

“One lady shared that A Matter of Balance was the most useful class she had ever had for her personal well-being,” Bormuth added.

A Matter of Balance was developed as part of the Steady U Ohio initiative to provide information and resources to older adults to help prevent falls. The program is endorsed by the Ohio Department of Aging due to its proven success with fall prevention.

Falls are the number one cause of injuries for adults over the age of 65 in Ohio, leading to ER visits, hospitalizations and deaths, according to Bormuth.

“Maintaining independence in our homes and being able to complete the necessary daily tasks are vital to us,” she said, “but as we become older, this can become a huge challenge. Some older adults may even restrict their daily activities due to their fear of falling.”

A Matter of Balance participants learn to view falls and the fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals for increasing activity and change their environment to reduce fall risk factors. Participants also complete simple exercises to help with strengthening and balance that can be used at home and in the community.

The cost to attend A Matter of Balance is $25, but that fee is waived for current WMH Wellness Center members. For more information or to register for the June sessions, phone 419-294-4991, extension 2236, or email
